Pastoral Care by Jan Patočka

This thesis focuses on the key question of Patocka"s thinking - care of the soul. In Patocka"s texts it represents the difference between life based on opinions accepted without critical thinking or practical decisions, called naive life, and life based on critical examining. In my opinion, this dichotomy between the two "ways of life" makes some kind of backbone of Patocka"s Plato and Socrates interpretations in his postwar lectures. The philosopher in Patocka"s texts is Socrates. He first reveals the soul as "the most inherent nature of man", that needs to be taken care of. Aware of this Patocka approaches two other great Greek philosophers - Plato and Aristotle as well as the periods of Christianity, Renaissance and Enlightenment. This on the one hand means certain degree of adoption of Socrates" "care of the soul" but on the other hand falling away from it. In the time of Renaissance and especially during Enlightenment a new spiritual style "care of the world" is being born. This leads, according to Patocka, to such kind of understanding the being, that definite abandonment of Socrates" "care of the soul" follows, and the fixed essence of man is in jeopardy. Socratic Question as a Basis of the Care for One's Soul According to Jan Patocka

This thesis deals with the topic of the Socratic question as a basis of the care for one's soul in Patocka's texts within the period from 30th to 50th years of the 20th century. This topic is here divided into three larger coherent units. The first part deals with the Patocka's understanding of Socratic care for one's soul as a historical moral self-creation of man having a character of negatively oriented transcension, which is not determined by ideas, but associated in its way of distance from objectivity with motive of knowing unknowing about the last good. The second part of this thesis deals with Patocka's comprehending of Plato as a creator of metaphysical thinking, in which core stands this negatively oriented experience of Socratic moral reversal. Plato, however, this experience of originally unobjectivated horizon according to Patocka's interpretation objectivates as the world of eternal ideas. Patocka as a central interpretative motive of this experience inserts in his own interpretation of Plato the term of Being inspired by Heidegger, which is very close to Plato's Idea of Good laying beyond all divides of essence (ἐπέκεινα τῆς οὐσίας). Supercivilization. Patočka's Concept of Modernity and it's Relevance In The Context of Contemporary Historical Sociology.

This thesis deals with the concept of modernity called "nadcivilizace" ("supercivilization") that was developed in the nineteen-fifties by Czech philosopher Jan Patočka (1907-1977) in his originally unpublished study Nadcivilizace a její vnitřní konflikt. The main goal of the thesis is to introduce this concept in the framework of the author's life and work, as well as in the context of current research in the field of historical sociology. This goal is fulfilled through three main steps, which are preceded by preliminary remarks about the issues of nowadays civilizational analysis. The first part is focused on the introduction of the author's concept of modernity as it was presented in the aforementioned study. Patočka's original term "nadcivilizace" is introduced and put into the context of civilizational analysis. At the same time, the circumstances of the genesis of the text, and the spiritual framework of the epoch in which Czech philosopher lived, are presented. Second part attempts to put the original concept into the author's lecture of philosophy of history, and to demonstrate the changes that occurred in Patočka's understanding of modernity in his work Kacířské eseje o filosofii dějin (Heretical Essays in the Philosophy of History, 1975). Jakub Marek, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The thesis Faust and the role of myth in the philosophy of Czech thinkers: Bratránek, Masaryk, Patočka, deals with the theme of Faust and its role in individual works of the mentioned philosophers. The thesis briefly contains the origin and development of the Faust myth, its most famous literary work, and its appearance on the Czech territory. The main chapters of the thesis are those that are focused on such texts of the mentioned thinkers, who are concerned with the Faustian theme. The resulting analyzes and comparations contribute to the depiction and arrangement of the role of the Faustian myth in Czech philosophy, mainly because of the different approaches, goals and methods of research used in their work by F. Comments of Patočka's lectures on Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit

The aim of this diploma thesis is to offer a comprehensive commentary of Patočka's unpublished lectures on Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, which he gave at the Charles University during the summer semester of 1949. These lectures remain unfinished and the exposition of the Phenomenology of Spirit ends before the chapter on morality. Patočka is influenced, to a considerable degree, by the unorthodox reading of Hegel that Kojéve presents in his Inroduction à la lecture de Hegel (1947) and also by a somewhat more conservative commentary by Jean Hyppolite, published in 1946 under the title Genese et structure de la Phénoménologie de l'esprit de Hegel. This thesis follows their influence on Patočka's commentary, in an attempt to discover Patočka's own interpretative stance. Patočka places the Phenomenology of Spirit into a wide context and tries to illustrate its genesis. Following Kojéve, Patočka's interpretation remains nested within an anthropological perspective, considering the master-slave dialectic to be the centerpiece of Hegel's philosophy.

Interpretation of Comenius by Jan Patočka in the context of his philosophy of history

Patočka´s interest in Comenius was motivated by his interest in the philosophy of history. The chapter demonstrates Patočka´s concern with Comenius which resultated from Patočka´s focus on the turn from the Christian man to the man without Christiantiy as well as from his interest in the crisis of the modern man. For Patočka, the spiritual transformation, which is the main of civilisation difficulties of the modern humanity lies in replacing one´s “open soul” with a soul that´s “closed”. Patočka approaches Comenius as a thinker who´s difference from the main ideational trend of the modern age might be enormously inspirational in searching for a new spiritual path, whithout which our current humanity has no chance of leading itself out of the crisis that was brought on it by scinetific and technical civilisation; attention is drawn to the issue “pedagogy of the turn” towards the openness in the Post-European period.

Thesis The Philosophy of Education, Theory and Reality focuses on the brief historical development of educational ideals, the determination of the necessary virtues of the raised man, and the subsequent comparison of the established virtues with the current educational policy of the Czech Republic. After comparing with educational documents at national level, it has been found that some of the necessary virtues in these documents are not included.
